Chapter Sixteen

“I will master horseback riding,” Nix declares as he stares at his adversary, aka Elderon who is currently eating as fast as he can. He’s side-eyeing us, like he knows we’re up to some shit and he’s positive he’s going to stuff his face as quickly as he can before he’s forced to burn off some extra calories.

We haven’t heard anything from Torres in two days, so I decided to spend the day teaching Nix things he probably should have already known. Like the fine art of torture. I volunteered his grandma but he opted for horseback riding instead.

“First thing you need is the actual horse,” I say, since he’s just stared at Elderon for a good three minutes without bothering to get close.

“Yes… so… I googled it and it says if a horse pins his ears back, it means they’re not happy, and watch,” he says as he takes a step forward.

Elderon immediately pins his ears.

Nix quickly steps back into his spot and Elderon’s ears flick forward again. “He’s going to murder me.”

“It’s because you told him you’re afraid of him, and literally told him if he pinned his ears you wouldn’t get close. Just go grab him,” I say.

“What happens when he kicks my face in?” Nix asks. “Isn’t there anything else to ride?”

Ohhh boy is there ever. I grin at him and his face heats up as his eyes get wide.

“Not like that!”

“I didn’t say anything!”

“Yeah, you didn’t have to. Your face said it for you. God, I’m the worst person ever. It’s no wonder why Annie told me I need to learn how to flirt.”

“Oh? You’ve been flirting with me,” I tease as I press a finger under his chin to point it up.

“Obviously. Did you not see the way I poured your milk for you this morning?”

“You mean when you dumped the whole glass on my lap?” I ask.

“Sexy, right?” Nix asks, making me grin.

It was rather sexy, but if I get invested more in Nix, what’ll happen when he’s put in danger again? My mind flickers back to the destruction I’d created last time. What if I cared for him more than I do now? What else would I have done?

Nix grabs my hand but instead of pushing it away, he pulls it down and squeezes it. “What’s wrong? I was just goofing around. You don’t have to… you know, it was just some fun,” he says like he’s upset me, and I feel awful he thinks I’m not interested.

Why do I have to let my brain control me? Why do I have to be cursed with this magic?

Nix goes to turn from me but I grab his wrist before he can. He watches me closely, like he’s hoping to get something out of me that explains my hesitation, but I’m not sure what to say. I’m not sure what to do.

“I think you’re going to pick up this horseback riding thing pretty quickly,” I say instead.
